Krabi Phi Phi Activities & Sports
ROCK CLIMBING
This is a popular pastime in Krabi and the limestone cliffs in
the area seem to have been created by nature for this very purpose.
World renowned for the spectacular views and accessibility the
cliffs of Krabi see flocks of tourists and avid climbers annually.
One of the more popular, particularly with inexperienced climbers
is the climb to see the Princess Lagoon and the scintillating
views across the karst landscape both inland and out to sea that
lies next to Railey Beach. There are fixed ropes to assist you
at the steeper points, but most of it is a forest hike. Access
is at the south end of either Railey East or Phra Nang beach.
HONG ISLAND
This limestone island has a beach and is surrounded by coral
reef. To get to the islands takes about one hour by boat from
Ao Nang beach.
AO NANG BEACH
There are around 83 small islands of various size and shapes
in the bay off this beach. A boat trip or a sightseeing tour can
be arranged from here. Either talk to one of the many 'long-tail'
boat skippers or go on an organised tour one of the hotels or
tour agencies offer.
BEACH FUN
Railey beach provides a great beach area at low tide for frisbee
throwing (either on sand or in the water) or a game of football
with the locals. There's a permanent volleyball net too, where
you can play for hours with other enthusiastic players.
CANOEING
There are various establishments particularly on Ao Phra Nang
and Railey beaches where you can hire canoes, either by hour or
by day. A few charter companies in the area also offer canoeing
expeditions along the coast or around the islands in the area.
SNORKELING, SCUBA DIVING and FISHING TRIPS
are organized from most beaches, some offering canoeing in two-person
kayaks, sailing and windsurfing. If some sport is not offered
at your beach, you can easily take one of the regular long-tail
boats to the next beach and probably find it there.
PHI PHI ISLANDS
The superb scenery of these islands include beaches of silvery
sand, emerald green sea, coral reefs and an abundance of colourful
marine life.
THINGS TO DO ON PHI PHI
PUB CRAWL Tin Tins and Carlitos Bar on Phi Phi Island
are the closest thing to a party pub but again its pretty easy
going.
VIEW POINT To see the classic view of Phi Phi Island follow
the path behind Tonsai Village and ask for the View Point. The
path is very good, and it will take between 25 and 55 minutes.
At sunrise many people unable to make the hike up to view point
in the morning go the beach in front of the Beach Club to watch
the sun spill onto the cliffs at dawn
MASSAGE Check out the shops where staff have been trained
at Wat Po (Center for Thai Massage in Bangkok). Massage can be
dangerous, so please take care that the person attending you really
does know what they are doing otherwise you could land up with
more aches and pains than you started out with.
SNORKELING, SCUBA DIVING and FISHING TRIPS Phi Phi Islands
have some of the more popular dive spots a short boat ride away
or simply jump into the water with a pair of goggles on, paddle
out a short way and below you, in the emerald waters you'll see
a marine wonderland. On the other hand if you'd rather catch the
fish, Phi Phi has a number of charter companies catering to this
sport.
BOXING 3 times a week the Reggae Bar complex has live
real Thai Boxing. These Bangkok professionals have a training
camps on Phi Phi Island. Friday night the purse is real and so
is the fight. They get some big national names in the high season.
Fight night is big and so are the crowds
HAIR BRAIDING Very popular amongst the younger crowd.
Good value.
SNOOKER The snooker hall next to Tintin's bar and Club
has 6 full size tables, 80 Baht an hour.
COCK FIGHTING and FISH FIGHTING The local Muslims love
to gamble and Cock Fighting and Fish Fighting can be seen every
now and again.
FOOTBALL About 3 times a year Phi Phi hosts a football
tournament, island style. About 15 teams fight it out over 10
days of serious competition.
